Blogging in the Classroom

I hope to use my blog in my classroom to poll, and have the students take a stance on different science topics. Biotechnology, genetic engineering, and using science in there everyday life are just some of the ideas I have begun to explore. I think this a way for them to learn to take a position and support their decisions. This would be a great way to make cross curricular connections and practice effective writing. This would count as a homework assignment, and will create a rubric for this. I hope this will be another way to prepare them for higher education while still covering course content.

  1. I also teach high school and I like your idea of doing surveys and also the cross curricular writing. The one issue I would check on is whether blogging sites are accessible from your school. I found out that blogs are blocked at my school through a web filter. I have already put in a strong request to have this changed. I know we have to have a secure internet, but we are also protecting our kids by denying access to great technology where they could learn so much and be more prepared for higher education. This is like burning books because of inappropriate content instead of teaching kids how to deal with inappropriate material and what is acceptable for school.

  2. I think one challenge you might face (especially in high school) is the use of inappropriate language. If students decide to be silly and use another student's identity to post, that might get that student in trouble unknowingly! I'm sure this would be a rare case, but it could happen.

I'm not sure how you would avoid this situation without creating a code that only you and that student know. That way you could validate the originality. Just a thought!

  3. I also teach high school and safety is a big issue at my school. In my case having 5 classes with 35 students in a classroom is not easy to monitor. I know I will have a lot of students that will follow the rules, but some that will be a challenge.

  4. I think your idea of polling is great. I love the idea of having a bog for high school students in this day in age. I too agree with the fact that you may have a problem with inappropriate language. I am worried about it and I teach 3rd grade.

In September, I have to make sure it's not blocked. If it is, I fill out a form and it will be unblocked in 48hrs. We are getting a new filter this year so I hope they have all of the kinks worked out by the time we get back in September.

    Thanks,

My students have a Code of Conduct/Internet User Contract they sign every year, as well as their parents. I don't think it would be a problem. I also would send a permission slip home that the parents would have to sign. This way they all know what is expected and the consequences of their actions.
    Thanks,
