Game Plan- Week 3 Post

As mentioned from the previous post, I want my students to become socially responsible for themselves on various types of media they encounter. I want them to realize that their actions have consequences and they need to be responsible for them. In order for me to convey the severity and importance of web safety, I will utilize my colleagues to make connections across the curricula. This way the students see that it is a collaborative effort to protect them and aid them ultimately in their studies. I also feel it is important to allow the students to explore Web 2.0 tools only after being in serviced on them myself. I was lucky enough to be part of the Powerful Learning Practice Cohort lead by Will Richardson. I have learned many ways to use technology within my classroom but I feel the students can also teach me as well. They linked to technology constantly and working together benefits us both. I also will continue my professional development to keep me abreast of new technologies that arise.

Since beginning my Master Program I feel I have taken my knowledge of technology to new heights. I have gained many strategies to engage my students and modify teaching to aid them the best way I can. I hope to continue my educational
pursuits and aid my students by utilizing these pedagogues within my classroom.

  1. I think that having the students observe us as teacher working together does the students a lot of good. It shows them that in real life adults are required to work together and it is important to know how to work well with other person if though that person may not be your best friend. In this global economy students are going to need those interpersonal skills as well as the technology skills in order to be successful in the future.

  2. I could not agree with you more. Students need to understand that their actions have consequences. I work in a middle school and it feels like every year students feel they have all of these rights and never understand that with rights come consequences. Do you feel like students in your school are trying to grow up to fast? With that being said it is what it is and we as educators and parents just have to emphasis it and help guide them in the right directions. You mentioned about showing the kids across curriculum. To me this is exactly what the student’s need consistency throughout each class. Does this seem to be an issue in your school? In my school there are many teachers that do not hold students to the school rules so when they come to my class I often get, "but so and so lets me". To me that is the most frustrating part because the kids are getting mixed signals and then they never know what to do. I feel that making things consistent is extremely important in the success of the student not only academically but socially as well. I also agree with you that adults can learn a lot from students when it comes to technology. They are much faster learners and use it a great deal more than we do so we should seize every teachable moment and model to each student that we are active learners as well.

  3. Your post hit the nail on the head. I was struggling with the thought that "all actions have consequences" today in school wondering what was going on with my group of seventh graders! I know that it is the end of the school year, but it seems as though students have forgotten how to act at school. We have been discussing school rules in my saftey and discipline committee and have come to the conclusion that students need structure, especially at the middle school level. School rules are going to be either practiced by all teachers or thrown out of the student handbook. If all teachers can work together on creating a constant environment then students will learn that their actions do in fact have consequences.

    Thanks!
I know. They need to know how to talk to people and act. I hope that I help them learn this important life skill.

I definitely feel the students are trying to grow up to early. I am not sure the way to really combat that but I just keep stressing consequences.
Being in a private coeducational setting, is great, except for the dress code. I get the same quote you said from the kids. Some teachers are way to strict and others are way to lenient. There needs to be a common ground where you follow the rules but exceptions can be made in extenuating circumstances. Maybe those exceptions need to come from one of the offices. They have much more power then us teachers.
