  1. I also teach well over 100 students, and it is nearly impossible to make connections with every student every day. I try to circulate regularly through the classroom on days when we are working on projects, and I try to concentrate on certain areas each day. Some kids want more attention to others, and I try to keep this in mind as well. While I cannot remember which kids I have interacted with more in every single class, it is a little easier to remember to pay special attention to the back left corner of the room on Monday, the front right corner of the room on Tuesday, etc.

It is also great to see kids at their extracurricular activities. Luckily the kids at my school are pretty talented, so it is entertaining to go to a basketball game, watch a play, sit in on a Christmas concert, etc. Plus, teachers usually get in for free with one extra person, so it provides a cheap night out for my fiancé and me.

  3. Michele,
I can not imagine teaching so many students and keeping up with all of them everyday. Elementary is so different. Kuddos to you and Rob for finding ways to get to know so many students and make them feel important.

I was wondering as I looked at the picture of your classroom if you do allow group work. Sometimes just a different organization of the desks in the classroom makes the day a little brighter. I know that when I go in for my class, the desks are pretty much arranged like yours but when it is activity time they get into groups of four and they have to turn the desks to face each other so that it looks uniform. My students stay in the room and the teachers move around. I finish in time for them to rearrange the desks before the other teacher walks in.

I use group work most of the time. We are always moving the desks in some kind of formation. The classroom is not that big so I keep them in rows so it is easier to move between classes. For the most part they move into pairs or fours.
The poor teacher in the classroom below me said it usually sounds like a herd of elephants 5 minutes into my class and 5 minutes before the bell! Hahaha!
