After reading and reflecting on the website Partnership for the 21st Century Skills; http://www.21stcenturyskills.org/images/stories/otherdocs/p21up_Report.pdf
I was taken back by the amount of information and resources that are available to aid those not as versed with technology and web 2.0 tools in regard to the classroom. I was also elated to see that there is a movement forward to progress with the times and that people understand that this will be a process that we will continue to grow and change.
I was pleasantly surprised when the site started discussing how we have to make our students aware of civic literacy and financial, economic, and business literacy. Before reading the site I thought that this was going to just discuss web and 2.0 tools in the classroom. But it did much more then that. It gave plans for making our students become productive members of society not just students. A student of the future must be well rounded and be able to collaborate. This site shows what specific states are proposing as well as were we are heading to keep us contenders in the job market in the future.I believe they will have to be much more worldly then they are now. I did not agree with anything in particular but I wish that there skills could be implement. There are so many variables to attend to with this. I hope that things settle down and get done, not just talked about.
I love using technology within my classroom. We must remember that technology is ever changing. Staying focused on our aiding our students and moving forward should be a few of our goals. Our students deserve the best and we should have the resources to aid them in this venture. The Internet has changed our lives and the work force. We have to change with it and use it to help our students.

I also hope that this group is able to move and shake the system a little and get things done, not just talked about, as you put it. Too many times, we see politicians and people that have great visions, yet we never see those visions take shape in society. Yes, as educators we have to change our ways in using the internet, technology and teaching. You and I seem to be on board with this. We can just hope that other educators will jump on board as well and we will not be alone in this endeavor.
ReplyDeleteMrs. C,
ReplyDeleteI agree our students should be well rounded in the areas of media. I found the Eutopia video clips to be very eye opening. Maybe this would be helpful to bring to our administration for the push for more technology in the classrooms.

I feel like there are many political things that need to change for us to totally integrate media into our daily lessons. I think we can only continue to be motivated as teachers to bring the new technology to our classes. Projects that require critical thinking should be a must for 21st century skills.
I was also impressed with the emphasis on the website on civic responsibility and becoming a well rounded citizen of the 21st century. With the new technology will come (and they are here now) new ethical responsibilities that citizens have not had to think about before (privacy issues, how to post and respond responsibly, what to do if a student encounters an inappropriate comment, etc.). We need to teach technology skills but also how to deal with this ever changing world of technology in our lives, our businesses, and our schools.
ReplyDeleteThere was a crazy amount of information on that site, wasn't there? I am glad that it has useful information which, like you said, taps into the need for our students to be prominent members of society. Not only do they need the technical knowledge of how to properly use the actual technology, they need the skills needed to succeed in the job market and the world in general in practical, social, and inter/intrapersonal ways. I love that the site offers assistance in each of these areas.

I too was impressed by the crazy amount of information that it possessed. I could not find the curriculum suggestions and such, but I eventually found it. Check back, it is pretty neat!
